Native Houstonian Keith Downey Recognized for Making an Impact for Underserved Communities

Architect and community advocate Keith Downey has been recognized by Black Impact Magazine as one of the 26 of 2026 Men of Impact for decades of leadership in affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization, and community empowerment.
During his 27-year career in New York City, Downey designed affordable housing for low-income families throughout Harlem, Spanish Harlem, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. As an architectural designer and senior construction project manager, he received numerous awards and recognition for his contributions, and supervised the rebuilding of the first handicap-accessible playground in Queens.
Returning to his hometown of Houston, Downey has continued his commitment to community development by serving in advisory roles for several respected organizations, including:
MD Anderson Cancer Center
LBJ Hospital Alliance
Texas Southern University Center for Biomedical and Minority Health Research
In addition, Downey cofounded Wraparound Services in the Houston Independent School District, which helped connect students and families to the resources needed to thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. “I’ve always wanted to make a positive impact for underserved communities,” said Downey. “By building a stronger community, we create a better quality of life for families, ensuring that they will have a better tomorrow.”
Downey currently serves as the Director of Partnerships with the Northeast Houston Redevelopment Council that acts as a platform for economic development, equitable education and citizen empowerment. Additionally, he is a founder of the Northeast Community Farmers Market which has addressed food insecurity in his community for nearly 8 years.
For his community impact, Downey has received several recognitions, including:

Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, 2023 and 2024
2025 Outstanding Texan Award from the 89th Texas Legislative Black Caucus
